LASIK

At OCCLASIK, we provide you with the best form of laser vision correction that is currently available by using the advanced LASIK technology platform. With that comes superior technology that is completely simplified to provide a seamless experience that leaves you with unparalleled, crystal clear vision. This is accomplished in a series of procedures that are exclusive to the LASIK experience, which only takes minutes to complete.

In order to fully grasp this concept, we must first understand what we are trying to achieve. LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis and in this procedure we are trying to correct a patient’s myopia, hypermetropia, or astigmatism through permanently changing the shape of the cornea, the clear covering of the eye. Here is what happens:

You begin by getting an extensive exam by one of our trained LASIK team members. We are always proud of the fact that we not only have experience in LASIK surgery and its technology, but that we are medical doctors first. When you get an exam from us, you know that you’re getting the best through our comprehensive knowledge of the eye.

Enhanced computer software, otherwise known as the WaveScan technology, is then used to make a customized blue print of your eyes that is truly unique to you. This will capture all the distinctive characteristics from your eyes which will help to precisely guide your laser vision correction.

Because you are receiving the completely bladeless, all-laser-LASIK, you are really benefiting from the LASIK experience. Unlike some other LASIK providers, we do not use the alternative option of using a microkeratome, which is using a metal blade to cut the flap of your eye. The microkeratome technique is less safe, precise, and accurate than the all-laser-LASIK procedure used by OCCLASIK.

Although using a laser to create the flap of your eye may sound intimidating, the procedure is painless. You are given numbing eye drops to remove any chance of experiencing pain. Unlike the microkeratome technique, which allows for rough movements and leaves room for error, all-laser-LASIK provides a smooth and accurate approach. Although the technology is very complex, the procedure is actually very simple due to the advanced technologies used in LASIK. This led to it being the first LASIK platform used to treat the eyes of jet fighter pilots who land on aircraft carriers.

A precisely created laser flap is the first step in the LASIK procedure. Once formed, this flap is then lifted to allow your doctor to prepare the eye for laser correction. A second laser, called the excimer laser, is then used to make the correction to your cornea that works in sync with the customized WaveScan of your eyes. Again, although it may sound intimidating, it is completely painless. When the laser is applied to the eye to make the necessary corrections, the time will range from 20-30 seconds per eye depending on your prescription. It’s that simple. With all the testing and information gathered from the unique qualities of your eyes through the WaveScan, an integral part of the LASIK technology, the laser is able to apply this knowledge to your eye to provide the best possible outcome. Finally, by creating the flap with such a high degree of accuracy, the doctor will be able to reposition it back into its original position, completing the final step in your LASIK laser vision correction procedure. You will finally have great vision to free you from glasses and contact lenses.

PRK

Despite some differences from LASIK laser vision correction, the same ideas and superior technology is applied when opting for the PRK procedure, leaving you with the same unparalleled, crystal clear vision. This will also be accomplished in a series of procedures that are exclusive to the LASIK experience.

PRK, which stands for Photorefractive Keratectomy, is a form of laser vision correction in which our doctors reshape the corneal in the same way it is done through LASIK vision correction without creating a flap on the corneal surface. This technique is usually used for people whose cornea may be too thin to safely allow for the creation of the corneal flap required for LASIK. This procedure is also used to correct a patient’s myopia, hypermetropia, or astigmatism that might be too severe for standard LASIK.

As stated, the separating factor from the standard LASIK procedure is the way in which the cornea is dealt with. Instead of using a laser to cut a flap, the surface cells of the central cornea are removed. Once removed, an excimer laser is then used to make the correction to your cornea that works in sync with the customized WaveScan of your eyes. The laser is then applied to the eye to make the necessary corrections with a time that will range from 20-30 seconds per eye. With all the testing and information gathered from the unique qualities of your eyes through the WaveScan technology, the laser is able to apply this knowledge to your eye to provide the best possible outcome. Upon completion, the doctor will place a bandage on the eye that is similar to a soft contact lens, which will be removed once the epithelial cells grow back. Once healed, you will officially be free of glasses and contacts and can begin to experience a life with superior vision.
