The old adage goes, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” but new information suggests that coffee may be that magical ingredient. Although too much coffee can be a bad thing, here is some insightful information regarding how coffee can actually be beneficial to your eyesight!

The Benefits

The study suggests that coffee may be effective in preventing the deterioration of eyesight along with blindness caused by aging, glaucoma and diabetes. In addition to eye benefits, Medical News Today reported that consuming 2 or more cups of coffee a day can reduce liver cirrhosis and death risk by an estimated 66%! Additionally, researchers suggest that men who drink the same amount can reduce risk of prostate cancer.

The Science

The magical ingredient in coffee is chlorogenic acid also known as CLA. CLA is a powerful antioxidant and has been shown to prevent macular degeneration in mice. It was a team from Cornell that originally devised the experiment and executed their theory by treating mice with nitric oxide. The nitric oxide causes oxidative stress, which leads to retinal degeneration. However, the mice that were treated with CLA did not develop any retinal degeneration! The researchers noted, “This study shows that CGA and coffee extract are responsible for reduction of the RGC apoptosis induced by hypoxia and nitric oxide. Therefore, coffee consumption may provide additional health benefits by preventing retinal degeneration.” Although there are potential health risks, the Mayo Clinic suggests that drinking more than 4 cups of coffee a day can hazardous to your health.
